Chapter 6 The Connected Educator

In a world where technology is constantly evolving, our learning methods must also adapt accordingly. By utilizing technology and the internet we are able to open up new opportunities for broader understanding and deeper learning. Chapter 6, of The Connected Educator, highlights the importance of technology in learning and provides guidance on how to effectively use personal learning networks (PLN) as a tool to build connections, and advance professional developments. By creating strong networking foundations and collaborating across different disciplines, individuals are able to exchange insights and stay informed on current developments and techniques relevant to their career field. This promotes a two-way flow of continuous growth and learning, leading to improvements in both work performance and in personal growth. 


This chapter gives strategies for optimizing your personal learning network. When building your PLN it is essential to remember that its effectiveness depends on several key factors. The first of these factors include having a diversity of members, which is vital for obtaining a wider range of perspectives and resources. The quality of relationships within the network is also an important factor since stronger, genuine connections allow for better collaboration, trusted advice, and more personalized feedback. Another factor is the ability to filter when making connections, connecting only with reliable individuals who share similar goals ensures that more refined results are achieved. The last of these key factors are the willingness to share information, and the willingness to apply what you learn in practice. Contribution from all members helps establish continuous knowledge, benefiting all members involved. Being able to integrate and apply the strategies and techniques learned from these communities will make your PLN a valuable tool for continuous development. 



Just like technology, medical advances are constantly evolving, and new developments are always being made. As a student studying in health science it is crucial to keep up to date on these discoveries. By leveraging online tools, I can create a personal learning network to help me stay informed. Having a PLN can also benefit me in my future career path as an occupational therapist. It will allow me to connect with peers and professionals within and outside of my discipline, helping me stay updated on research, receive advice from experts and discover new methods and practices. Staying connected on a broader level can enable me to adopt new techniques, and personalize treatments that better meet the needs of my clients. Ultimately this form of networking will improve my skills and ensure that my patients receive the highest quality of care.

This chapter emphasizes the importance of these concepts that “fuel for positive change” within the education system.
